Bayer Leverkusen Sporting Director Simon Rolfes provided an update on striker Victor Boniface’s fitness ahead of the 2026/2027 Bundesliga season.
Speaking to Sport Bild in comments published by Rheinpfalz, Rolfes said the Nigerian forward’s knee has recovered well following previous injury setbacks. However, he noted that Boniface’s weight remains a concern and is the main area the club wants him to improve. Rolfes stated the goal is to help the 25-year-old regain peak physical condition so he can attract interest from top clubs in the future.
Boniface joined Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2023. In his first season, he registered 21 goals and nine assists across 34 appearances.
His performances earned him four Bundesliga Rookie of the Month awards and played a key role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten title-winning campaign under manager Xabi Alonso. The following season was disrupted by multiple injuries, limiting him to 27 games. He finished the 2024/2025 campaign with 11 goals and one assist.
Rolfes emphasized Boniface’s importance during the club’s championship season. He said the striker embodied the team’s aggressive attacking approach when they won the league. The sporting director added that he maintains regular contact with Boniface, texting every few days.
With pre-season preparations underway in Germany, Leverkusen’s staff will focus on the striker’s conditioning to ensure he can compete for a starting position when the new season begins in August 2026.
