France forward Kylian Mbappé moved past Lionel Messi on the list of all-time FIFA World Cup goalscorers Tuesday, netting twice in a 3-1 win over Senegal at the 2026 tournament.

Mbappé scored in the 66th minute and again in stoppage time at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., raising his career World Cup total to 14 goals. The brace puts him ahead of Messi’s 13 goals and ties him with Germany’s Gerd Müller for third place in tournament history, behind Brazil’s Ronaldo with 15 and Germany’s Miroslav Klose with 16.

The match was France’s opening game of the 2026 World Cup, which began June 11 and runs through July 19. Mbappé, 27, is playing in his third World Cup after winning the title in 2018 and reaching the final in 2022.

His two goals against Senegal also made him France’s all-time leading scorer with 58 international goals, passing Olivier Giroud. France coach Didier Deschamps said the win gave the team relief to start the tournament.

Mbappé’s 14 World Cup goals have come in 15 matches across the 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions. Messi, who led Argentina to the 2022 title, has 13 goals in 26 matches over five tournaments. Mbappé’s next chance to add to his tally comes Monday, June 22, when France faces Iraq at Philadelphia Stadium.
