Nigeria’s electoral landscape is entering a new phase with the conclusion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). After serving two consecutive five-year terms, Professor Yakubu steps down as the first INEC chairman to complete a full decade in office.

President Bola Tinubu accepted the departure and honored Yakubu with the national award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in recognition of his service. Under his leadership, INEC introduced transformative technologies such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), which brought greater transparency and efficiency to the electoral process.

In accordance with the constitution, the President has appointed the most senior National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, as the acting Chairman of INEC. A seasoned legal expert with over thirty years of experience, Agbamuche-Mbu is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales and is widely recognized in Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Her immediate responsibility will be to oversee the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship Election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
