Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has launched a scathing attack on the club’s ownership, calling their strategy a "disaster" even after the team reached the 2026 FA Cup Final.
Following a 1-0 semi-final win over Leeds United, Mikel warned that deeper issues remain unresolved, pointing to the club’s record £262 million pre-tax loss. He argued that missing out on Champions League qualification would be a "fucking disaster," potentially forcing Chelsea to sell star players like Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez just to balance the books.
The former midfielder specifically criticized the club’s policy of handing out eight- and nine-year contracts to young players, claiming it removes professional hunger and accountability. He also expressed frustration that club legends like John Terry continue to be overlooked for leadership roles, suggesting the owners prefer "yes men" who will not challenge their data-driven model. According to Mikel, this approach has left a talented but inexperienced squad without a proper understanding of Chelsea’s winning culture.
Mikel delivered a blunt ultimatum to the board, demanding an immediate change in direction. "Tear up that book of the model that they have right now because it's not working," he said. "Get back to who we are; bring in players that want to win winners that know what it feels like to win trophies." He added that Chelsea does not give players time to develop, and the current squad lacks the experience required to uphold the club’s historic standards.
