Former Nigeria head coach Sunday Oliseh has revealed the key reasons behind the Super Eagles’ strong showing in the AFCON qualifiers, while also pointing out what could prevent the team from reaching the final of the tournament. The former international praised Nigeria’s dominance in their group, attributing it to tactical discipline, quality players, and attacking efficiency.
According to Oliseh, the Super Eagles have shown consistency in their performances, which allowed them to overcome their group opponents with confidence. However, he warned that despite their impressive progress, certain weaknesses could still hinder their ambition of lifting the AFCON trophy if not urgently addressed.
Speaking about Nigeria’s impressive performances across their three AFCON qualification matches, Oliseh revealed that the biggest advantage the Super Eagles possess is their highly potent striking force, which has consistently troubled opponents. The former Super Eagles captain noted that Nigeria boasts attackers capable of creating chances and converting goals at crucial moments, making them one of the most destructive teams in the competition. He added, however, that defensive lapses remain a serious concern.
Oliseh stressed that Nigeria’s greatest threat to success lies in their inability to maintain defensive solidity after scoring. “What could stop Nigeria from winning the AFCON is if we don’t get our defensive house in order, to make sure that when we score, we don’t concede,” he said.
