Following the Nigeria Super Eagles’ arrival in Rabat, Morocco, for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), head coach Eric Chelle has appointed a new captain to lead the team throughout the tournament. The decision comes as part of the technical crew’s efforts to strengthen leadership within the squad as Nigeria targets a successful AFCON campaign.
The appointment was confirmed after an international friendly match against the Egyptian national team, which ended in a 2–1 defeat for Nigeria. Following the match, Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was named the new captain of the national team. Ndidi, who plays his club football with Beşiktaş, takes over the armband after the retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong from international football.
With this new role, Wilfred Ndidi is now fully entrusted with representing the Super Eagles as their on-field leader, both during matches and within the dressing room. Ndidi is expected to provide stability and motivation as Nigeria competes against Africa’s best teams.
